Governor Schwarzenegger has signed deals with five American
Indian tribes in an effort to bring California billions of dollars
in tax revenues.
In return for the new fees, the tribes can increase their number
of slot machines.
The agreement marks another victory for the novice governor.
Schwarzenegger campaigned on a promise to have tribes share
more of their income with the state.
The money will be used to help the state during its tough financial
times.
In addition to the money paid this year, the tribes will pay
250 million dollars a year for another 25 years.
Schwarzenegger is also working on getting a dozen other tribes
to make similar deals with the state.
The governor has also vowed to fight measures that would expand
gambling off Indian lands.
