Online gambling provider Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG has signed a sponsorship deal with FC Bayern Munich that evades current local advertising restrictions.
Last year, Bwin was forced to terminate a deal it had signed with Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen after provisions in the State Treaty on Gaming prohibited the advertising of real-money gambling in sports.
However, this latest agreement will see the nation’s current defending champions display advertising for Bwin’s free online casino and games site at free-bwin.com during all domestic competitions for the next 20 months. In addition, the Munich-based club will promote the real-money Bwin.com domain for matches held outside Germany such as the Champions League or UEFA Cup.
Bwin already has sponsorship deals with European soccer giants AC Milan of Italy and Real Madrid of Spain and is also fighting in court for the right to operate legally in Germany under the authority of its Gibraltar and former East German licences.
