Finding romance through all the daily hurry and scurry isn't the easiest thing in the world, as all women know. Sometimes it can even feel like there simply isn't energy to enjoy that candlelit dinner, or appreciate communicating with that special someone.
That's when the power of details can come in. It's all very well to read the women's magazines that suggest various stages of undress and lingerie as the ultimate romantic solution.... but what about a long look into your loved one's eyes? They say so much, and are probably the real reason you fell for him in the first place... so never underestimate the power of the window to your soul. Better still... even if you get a fit of the giggles whilst looking googley-eyed at him, it's nevertheless the kind of real contact that brings you closer!
If these phrases have meaning for you, it's time to meet someone's eyes again:
"Their eyes met across a crowded room..." (remind you of anything?)
"I only have eyes for you..." (make sure he knows it.)
"The eyes have it..." (they most certainly do!!)
Life is all about noticing details, and offering the small gestures that make the day go more smoothly and keep the people around you happy in the knowledge that you are really aware of them.
But what's in a gesture, I hear people protest. Surely all that small potatoes, helping hand stuff is meaningless in view of the big picture and the state of the world today - look at the war now going on in Iraq, for example. Yes, humanity can be at its worst during a war, but that's no reason to give up on the small gestures of consideration that the important people in your life need.
To do this, we need to understand who the important people in our lives are. They can include parents, grandparents, children, spouses, tried and true friends, and colleagues. The next step is in understanding what they need to hear or see from you on a consistent basis. That means breaking out of the "taking for granted" mode and really taking a good look at the individual whose life is intertwined with your own.
My mother, for example, kept quiet for years about the fact that she really wanted me to call her once a day to make sure everything was ok for me! I was shocked when she finally confessed that her professed view that we were more friends than mother-and-daughter was actually largely a cover for some real concern - it's a dangerous world out there! It takes five minutes a day, but calling her is a small gesture that she appreciates.
One of my good friends would rather enjoy looking at a fresh bouquet of flowers than eat! Yes... it's perhaps not the most practical of life views, but it's hers, so I take her a bouquet of flowers whenever I can.
So remember, don't ignore the small stuff.....it really counts for people.
