| The more I look around me these days it seems that the "true gentleman" is becoming an extinct species. Society is changing but that does not mean you should stop being a true gentleman yourself. It is something to be proud of and very noble. Good manners will not only get you a long way in life but will also help you with that important woman in your life.
I'm not saying I am the perfect example but being brought up by my grandparents I did learn the good old fashioned way of how a man should behave.
Here are just a few of my tips on becoming a better man:
GENERAL ETIQUETTE
Firstly, never use foul language
Swearing is an absolute no-no. It is very impolite to the people around you and shows you don't have the basic English vocabulary to express yourself.
Never shout or lose your temper
This only shows that you don't have control over a situation or yourself for that matter.
Never interrupt
Interrupting while in the middle of a conversation shows poor etiquette and a lack of social skills. Waiting never hurt anyone.
Don't show off
Nobody likes people who show off. If you are well off and can afford good things, don't scream about them. You can wear expensive things without blowing your trumpet.
Use verbal grace
Always use terms such as "excuse me" or "I beg your pardon".
Tips
Make sure you always tip well and discreetly but only when a tip is called for. Remember the norm is 15% gratuity for restaurant tabs and nothing less than $20 for a maitre d'.
ETIQUETTE TOWARDS A FEMALE COMPANION
Open doors
Some might see this as a thing of the past but I must say this does remain one of the most basic rule of male etiquette. Whether it's a car, apartment, house, restaurant or club, you should always open the door and hold it open until the woman enters or leaves.
Ask if she needs anything
Make sure to ask the lady if she needs anything such as a drink or eat, depending on the event.
Wait before eating
When you sit down for a meal, make sure to wait until your lady is properly seated and ready to commence the meal before eating. You should eat at the same time; this is a very important rule.
Her coat
If a lady was wearing a coat always help her put it on when leaving.
Never smoke in her presence before you ask.
Always request her permission before lighting up.
Always carry a woman's packages
This is the least you could do for a lady or at least offer to do so. This lets her know you respect her and are courteous enough to care for her comfort.
Never laugh at her mistakes
This should be obvious for most but I have seen it happen on too many of occasions and is the one of the cruelest things one can do.
